Students at St Ambrose participate in weekly Auslan (Australian Sign Language) lessons with Mrs. Kate Old. This is offered as part of the specialist subject program, with lessons occurring on Thursday for the Junior School and Friday for the Middle and Senior School. Auslan at St Ambrose is based upon the current Victorian curriculum.
Through engaging in the lessons, the students learn communication skills that enable them to interact with others using Auslan. The students explore the multifaceted elements of the Auslan, including how facial expressions and gestures act as modifiers to specific signs adding to, or changing their meaning. The students explore the basics of Deaf culture and develop an understanding of the importance of Auslan in connection with Deaf culture and identity.
